District Guidelines for Cold Weather School Closing

The Madison Metropolitan School District policy for closing schools due to cold weather is a long standing policy arrived at in conjunction with the local medical community, Deputy Superintendent Art Rainwater said Thursday.

Rainwater said several years ago medical experts advised closing school if the wind chill exceeds 60 degrees below zero.

However, Rainwater said the District strongly encourages parents to make the decision that is best for their child. He said children kept home by parents are given excused absences. If students are scheduled to take final exams, parents are asked to notify the school of their decision and make-up exams will be provided, Rainwater said.
