FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22, 1998
Jim Ploeser, a senior at West High School, will be the student representative on the Madison Board of Education (BOE). Ploeser was elected in a district-wide vote held in Madison's high schools last week. Almost 5,000 students voted in the election -- a turnout of 64 percent of Madison's high school students.
Pabitra Benjamin, also a West HS senior, was elected as the alternate student representative. The alternate attends BOE meetings when the student representative is unavailable.
Ploeser and fellow student Ben Wikler were the main architects of the plan submitted to the BOE last year to allow for a student voice on the Board. In his campaign platform information, Ploeser said, "The work of this past year is now complete and our goals have been reached. I have seen this dream of mine accomplished."
He indicated that through his work on the issue he learned how the BOE operates and how to get things done. He also noted that he is involved in Wisconsin's Youth in Government program and has volunteered on several political campaigns.
Ploeser will be available to meet with the media today between 10:20 - 11:10 a.m. in Room 277 of West High School. Ploeser will take his place on the BOE at the Monday, November 2 meeting.
