Students "claimed" staff and became their technology mentors for the entire 97/98 school year. Both staff and students agreed to meet at least once a week for a minimum of 20 minutes. During this time direct instruction was given to the staff member by a student technology leader to advance the staff member's personal & professional technology skills. STL's actually worked with two other elementary schools, a middle school, an early childhood program AND our own staff here at Shabazz High School.
It became clear in the beginning that before any training could occur a couple things needed to happen: 1) existing equipment needed to be evaluated and user modifications / repairs needed to occur. 2) training content needed to be directly related to staff needs, be they learning how to use EMAIL, integrating existing knowledge/skills into the curriculum or advance a specific project idea of staff member; targeted skills would be obtained through pusposeful projects.
Students were evaluated on numerous scales and methods ranging from informal to formal, including a rubric. Areas evaluated included two different technological areas, curriculum mastery, work readiness, and leadership qualities.
Students were individually rated on:
| 15 areas of technical curriculum broken into two areas, mechanics (operating systems, hardware and printers) and process (software applications,manuevering network,email,basic & advanced internet, peripheral use, graphic & multimedia applications), rated on a scale of 1(least) to 20 (most). |

| 10 areas of work model expectations on a scale of 1(least) to 8 (most). These included Cooperation/Respect, Communications Skills, Work Quality, Initieative, Problem Solving, Dependability, Customer Service, Acceptance of Criticism, Personal Appearance and Attendance. |

Attendance - Shabazz has a strict attendance policy. Each student is allowed 7 absences. After that a student cannot receive academic credit. Same students were rated in this class and their other non service learning classes. |

Summary:
| Using technology curriculum and offering leadership opportunities students made significant gains in leadership skills. Leadership skills improved significantly more than either technical or work model skill areas. Staff benefitted by improved technology skills, greater comfort levels and having their systems become more "user friendly". |

This graph shows both student and staff progress in skill technical development. Here are 11 of the 15 areas rated. The remaining 4 areas were viewed as "advanced" areas. Click here if you want to see staff & student comparisons in the advanced areas. Both sets of skills are rated on a 20 point scale, 1 being knowing / demonstrating little knowledge and 20 being mastery. Saff experienced an average of 4.6 Units of Gain and students averaged 5.5 Units of Gain across the 15 areas rated. |

These 10 areas were used as "work traits" and rated on a scale of 1-8, 1 being least desirable and one being most. Students averaged between 1.5 and 2.0 Units of Gain in all areas except "Acceptance of Criticism" and "Personal Appearance". Overall improvement was 1.7 Units of Gain w/ a lower limit mean of 1.619 with 97.5% statistical confidence. |

Deliberate assistance / guidance of others in actions, opinions or attitudes. Takes iniative, follows through on ideas and commitments. Exceeds expectation of class curriculum. Students were rated upon entering STLP and again upon exit. Students were rated on 12 points of leadership qualities. Students experienced an average of 11.8 Units of Gain in the area of Leadership through the STLP curriculum and staff training project. Students experienced greater gain in the area of leadership than in the overall average of gain in technical skills. |

Shabazz has a strict attendance policy for all classes. We believe attendance is imperative for school success. Each student is allowed 7 absences per quarter per class. Once this limit is reached students are no longer eligable to receive credit for that class. (6 absences for 6th hr due to fewer class periods per quarter.) Students in the STLP program averaged 50% fewer absences in this class than in their other, non Service Learning classes. Students attend class more frequently, fewer students fail Service Learning coursework AND students participate to a higher degree. |

Feedback
Staff valued this experience because it provide "just in time" technical assistance for them to advance their projects, curriculum and skills. It occurred regularly and staff came to depend on the fact that indeed they had a time and a resource to have their questions answered. Many staff felt that turning the table and having the students teach them was valuable teaching "reminder" of how difficult both the roles of teacher and learner can be. No staff member resented the students knowing more than them and deeply appreciated student willingness to play the role as teacher and teach them valuable skills.
